Kent Man Dies After Being Hit By Car

February 1, 2012 - Kent, Ohio -  An 88-year old man was struck by a vehicle while walking outside his home.  The accident occurred around 10 p.m. in Kent, Ohio.  The victim was walking near his home and attempting to cross the street when he was struck by a passing Volkswagen.  The victim was transported to Akron City Hospital by ambulance.  The victim could not recover from his injuries, which ultimately caused his death.

This case highlights the dangers of walking at night.  Drivers may not see pedestrians attempting to cross the street. Couple the poor visibility with speed and the force of a vehicle and pedestrians have little or no chance to survive without serious injuries.   However, if a pedestrian is not crossing the street legally, the driver may not be at fault.  Drivers are often excused from liability when the strike a pedestrian who was jay walking or crossing outside the cross-walk.
