Thanksgiving day happened on this last wednesday and has passed, most families gathered in their hometown and celebrated the traditional Thanksgiving Day as a sign of being thankful for the blessings being received in the past months that have passed and a mark of a near end of the year. So, what exactly is Thanksgiving Day? 

Thanksgiving has no specific reason why it started, it began as a celebration for every fall harvest in 1621 and since then people give thanks to whatever they had at the moment or simply a celebration of gratitute in a form of holiday and gathering of family to eat together. It is a national holiday celebrated on not only one date (in U.S., it is on every November 25) but varies depending on country where it is celebrated such as Canada, Grenada, Liberia, and etc.

In this recent weekend, according to Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP), 13 were killed along Ohio’s roadways in 10 different crashes that are all deemed fatal which were all gathered in a 5-day coverage surveillance of road by the authority started from November 24 or this last wednesday until November 28 midnight. According to the detailed release of the patrol, of the 13 person died, one was found out to be a pedestrian, four of them were driving unrestrained, while the other three crashes were said to be caused by impaired driving. The troopers arrested more than 300 people for drunk driving offense while 147 for drugs consumance while driving. 

Thanksgiving related Accident Statistics 

  • According to National Safety Council (NSC), there were 35 fatal crashes and 37 fatalities recorded related to or within the days of celebration of Thanksgiving holiday in the year 2019. 
  • In 2018, 385 fatalities were the result of multiple accidents that had happened in 4-day Thanksgiving holiday period which was compared closely to the 11.67% of all traffic fatalities of the month of November. 
  • Traffic deaths estimation according to National Safety Council (NSC) is 445 up to 589 with a 90% confidence interval. 

  • From Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), Thanksgiving is the third among holidays with high fatalities related to the celebration next to Memorial Day and 4th of July.
