Pregnancy and Delivery Deaths

After between 37 and 42 weeks of pregnancy, the baby is matured enough to be delivered and see the beauty of the world. As the mother feel common symptoms of approaching labor such as strong contraction felt inside the belly, bloods, pain inside the belly and lower back, and water breaking, then it is likely that day away or hours away from your most dreamt of labor. Basically, labor is the process of childbirth and it is deemed as the most happiest event in a life of a woman, yet these moments are as well one of the riskiest event for a women that has to be done. As childbirth is associated with reported cases of deaths oftentimes since about 700 women that are about to be mother die from pregnancy related events such as childbirth annually according to Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

It seemed that there is no telling that the labor would go well as hoped by most but there is a bridge of risks that women have to bear and cross while they are on it. According to The Joint Commission from their previous study, they have collected most common risks that every hospital has encountered during their operation and procedures pregnancy related that are likely women who are in the process of childbirth may encounter anytime that are, somewhat preventable with proper patient-safety measures such as:

  1. Bleeding to death

Bleeding to death is one of the most common deaths among women who undergo childbirth, even with the providance of high end medical facilities, equipments and more established knowledge, it is surprising that there are women who still suffer of severe bleeding and eventually die. Though, there are multiple factors, reasons, and innate disease possessed by patient in labor such as postpartum hemorrhage, c-section, and a natural hereditary disease that cause one's body to bleed a lot from an injury or cuts.

Postpartum hemorrhage is a post-birth occurrence where heavy bleeding following successfully giving birth to a child by a woman. This specific bleeding is life-threatening as fast losing of blood may lead to a significant drop in one's blood pressure and when blood pressure drop low, it may pose danger to one's life or in fortunate scenario, to a shock at the least. Main reason for postpartum hemorrhage to occur is when uterus does not contract closely after the delivery.

Postpartum hemorrhage is one thing but excessive bleeding from an incission is scary as well and they both differ in terms of reasons. In common cases, c-section is a type of childbirth delivery wherein a child is taken from the mother's belly through an incission. Incissions for c-section are immediately covered up or stitched up to prevent further and unnecessary blood loss, but sometimes if a woman has a hereditary disease where she bleeds excessively from a cut, then it would be a problem and may lead to an ending similar to postpartum hemorrhage.

  2. Failing to monitor and control blood pressure properly

In most hospitals' operations, it is an imperative to monitor the patient's body before, during, and after a procedure as it is one of the basis if the patient is eligible for the operation and/or can manage to survive with it. One of those things that should be keep in check is blood pressure, especially in child birth of a woman. A significant increase in blood pressure can be deadly during pregnancy but it is something that doctors and other medical staff know how to treat but sometimes, failure in checking blood pressure itself that treating increased blood pressure in not in their mind.

  3. Failing to monitor vital signs after a c-section

As what previously said, c-sections are one of the most common major procedure conducted almost everyday. Blood pressure keeps decreasing as blood flows from the said incission which makes it risky, even after a successful c-section, it is vital to monitor bodily signs of the woman and assess it as her main status for making a good recuperation. Failing to do so might be a good determinant if the patient would survive from her blood loss, making a good monitoring with her vital sign will also give medical professionals a good sign to give her a blood transfer if she can't, but without good monitoring it would also essentially means ignoring the patient and letting her die.
